When was the last time you heard a message about “thou shall not covet”?
Exodus 20:17: “You must not covet your neighbor’s house. You must not covet your neighbor’s wife, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor.”
Coveting: A Ten Commandment
Coveting as a personal action: dealing with internal desires that affect one's relationships with others.
Coveting as a personal action: We may often covet through actions that cause harm to others
Micah 2:2 ESV - They covet fields and seize them, and houses, and take them away, they oppress a man and his house, a man and his inheritance.
"We covet as a declaration to the world that God alone is insufficient, and we proclaim to Him that He falls short for us. 'I desire that, I crave that; only then will I find fulfillment.' In our hearts, we long to bow before this idol, much like the Golden Calf.”
Coveting has a way of making us bound in life, and struggling to be fully devoted to Christ.
We must guard our hearts against desires that lead away from God!
Freed people are joyful & content!
Coveting is directional: World vs. Godly
Covenanting is about commitment, faithfulness, and trust. In a world that often prioritizes individualism and convenience, biblical covenanting calls us to deeper, more sacrificial relationships. Whether in marriage, friendships, church, or society, we are called to be people of our word, reflecting the steadfast love of God.
